Feng Shui Makeover Promotes Business – Part 2 of 2
by Master Jenny T. Liu, M.A.
Monday, March 17, 2008

This week we continue with a look at how feng shui principles were successfully applied to the McDonald’s franchise in Hacienda Heights with outstanding results.

Among some of the special dining area features are circular (water element) booths. The circular form creates a romantic seating area for couples to be “embraced.” Around this special sitting area is a circular and square form water fountain. In this instance, the circular fountain represents the male, and the square represents the female. Together, the forms symbolize the harmonious energies of yin and yang, or heaven and earth. Soothing and suggestive rippling water trickling from the fountains promotes love and attracts happiness. Walls designed with a wavy texture enhance the movement and flow of water, attracting energies of wealth and relaxation.

Although the Chi Art we recommended was not utilized, we did suggest alternative art depicting positive animals such as fish (water element) and dragons (metal element), respectively representing abundance and the power to release negative energies. The art is made of metal and is illuminated with red soffit lights.

We also recommended laying the floor tiles at a diagonal to create a dynamic diamond shape (metal element), which represents wealth flowing throughout the restaurant. A special curved path leading from the main door to the cashiers draws business, and coins laid under this tiled path further enhance bringing money in.

Within a month of the re-opening after the remodeling, business at the Hacienda Heights McDonald’s has doubled. All put together, this result speaks for itself.

The bottom line is that feng shui has an undeniable impact on all of us whether we are aware of it or not. There is simply no escaping the simple fact that our environment affects our behavior, emotions, mentality, actions and energy level. The basic principles of yin-yang (balance) and the Five Elements are a fundamental part of how we are connected to our environment.

In nature, the circle and square are primal forms, and in all cultures these primal forms are used in architecture. The circle evokes energies of wholeness, fulfillment, and the heavens. The square form is related to the earth and embodies the ideals of stability and permanence. The color red is related to fire, which on a psychological level is known to excite and stimulate. The sound, movement and visual flow of water are undeniably soothing, garnering energy and attention.

When you incorporate these basic forms into your environment, you have no choice but to slow down and enjoy the subliminal connection with nature. When we as humans relax, we live in the moment, food tastes better, conversation flows easily, and we feel happy.

The remodeled Hacienda Heights McDonald’s is now a stimulating environment that invites us to have an experience with our meal and increases our desire to return. The positive environment attracts positive things. This is the power of feng shui successfully implemented. Senior owner William Brownstein also agrees that when a restaurant becomes part of a family’s lifestyle and invites diners to return, the key to maintaining a successful business has been achieved.

The owners of this particular McDonald’s franchise are driven to be progressive and to maintain their status quo as a leader in their industry. They realize the importance of understanding the needs and desires of their diverse customers, and have taken a chance with feng shui. This step will have a permanent impact on the future of McDonald’s everywhere. As it is, the news of the Hacienda Heights franchise has spread across the United States and all over the world; reporters from London, Paris, China, Hong Kong and even New Zealand are finding this a most remarkable case.

Finally, and almost more important than benefiting the diners, it is vital for a restaurant to create an uplifting environment that rejuvenates and “recharges” the employees who work there every day. A supportive feng shui working environment creates motivation, pride and productivity among the staff. As any restaurant owner knows, hardworking, enthusiastic staff is key to running an efficient business and attracting return customers.
