What Is a Mantra?

Person Meditating     The following is from a question and answer session that occurred during a Tea Time workshop on Mantras.

Tea Time Guest: What is a mantra?

Master Jenny: A mantra is a chant that we do that also corresponds to a graphic mantra charm. The mantra charm is a configuration or diagram representing certain cosmic energies that release negative energies or enhance positive energies. My father’s paintings, called Chi Art, all have mantras embedded in them. Though Chi Art might look like regular painting, it is actually made up of special and powerful configurations of symbols and mantra charms that affect your personal energy. There are also accompanying hand positions called mudras to reinforce the connection with cosmic energies.

Tea Time Guest: What language are the mantra chants?

Master Jenny: Sanskrit, which is an ancient Tibetan language. The mantras are phonetically translated to our students from ancient books. Family treasures.

Master Chi-Jen Liu: It is a spiritual language.

Tea Time Guest: What is the ideal way to do mantra meditations - should you do all of them regularly, or just the ones in areas you feel you need the most help?

Master Chi-Jen Liu: Any spiritual action – mantra or mudra – is related to energy. Spiritual energy is stored in your body like memory is stored in a computer. Whatever you put into your body in the way of spiritual energy will be there for you when you need to draw from it. How much is there is up to you. If you save ten cents a day, the result is different than if you save one hundred dollars a day. It is the same with mantras - if you do the mantra(s) all the time, you increase the good karma by that much. If you don’t do them all the time, you still receive the benefit, just not as strong. So do what you can do.

Tea Time Guest: Is it a matter of degree? If you can chant mantras for one hour, that’s great, but if you can do it for five hours, it’s even better?

Master Jenny: Exactly. The effectiveness depends on the accumulation of energy. Your lifestyle and your karma may allow you the time, energy, and ability to recite the mantra three hours a day. However, if you are very busy because you are very prosperous and you can only do the mantra in small portions of time, maybe that’s all you need. The practice of mantras has to be balanced with your life. The ideal is to accumulate as much of the mantra energy as possible. You can chant the mantra while driving or doing chores around the house. Chanting mantras

does not mean you have to sit down and be completely focused and meditate. If I’m driving and I see road kill, I feel negative energy and right away I chant a mantra. You can incorporate it into your daily life.

Master Chi-Jen Liu: When you pass by a graveyard, chant the mantra. You can do it anytime.

Master Jenny: When you do that, it adds to your karma.

Master Chi-Jen Liu: There are different purposes and different levels of mantras. All of the mantras start with om. Om is white color - universal color – and represents a universal sun. The energy of om is the natural sun and its message makes you feel more positive and more peaceful. If you encounter an obstacle, build up your energy with the mantra and the obstacle automatically leaves.

Tea Time Guest: Where in the front door should I hang the mantra in the red pouch?

Master Jenny: I will explain this a little bit for those of you who have not heard of this. If the front door to your home is in the wrong orientation for you and you are limited in the amount of adjustments you can make to correct it, you can put a mantra charm – a talisman - on the door itself. That talisman is drawn on a piece of paper and placed in a red pouch or red envelope to make sure it keeps its power. The red pouch or envelope can then be placed anywhere on the door - at the top, on the frame, under the doormat – anywhere is fine. Of course, you want to place it somewhere where it won’t get lost, torn up, or damaged. It is preferable to place it high and on the door itself.

Master Chi-Jen Liu: Before you put the charm in the bag, you must chant the mantra and make the mudra. Then the energy of the charm will be related with you and will protect you.

Master Jenny: Empower the charm. When we prepare the mantras for you, my father meditates on you and empowers it, but that’s just the power of the charm. For it to have an effect on you, it’s a good idea to personally connect with it, so we ask that you blow your own breath onto it and do a mantra or chant. This creates an energy exchange between you and the talisman, activating its power.

Tea Time Guest: The empowerment is only done once, right? You don’t do it every day.

Master Jenny: One time is fine. If your front door faces a negative direction and you know that a negative event, like groundbreaking or construction work is about to begin, you can empower the charm again so it’s stronger.
