Feng Shui: Four Levels of Energy
by Master Jenny T. Liu, M.A.
Monday, December 7, 2009

Shrine in Shanghai     Energy can be broken down into four main levels: personal energy, energy of the home or office environment, exterior environment, and universal cosmic energies. These energies interconnect and interact with each other every moment of the day, creating your experience of life. Alone, each of the four levels has a certain minimal effect on you. It’s when we consider the unique interaction of all four that we can understand the potential cause and effect of energy in your life. This understanding of nature’s law of cause and effect is feng shui.

Person
Each person has a unique bio-frequency that interacts with the environment. Over thousands of years of feng shui history, records have been studied and organized to determine the optimal orientation of a person’s bio-frequency based on their year of birth. The bio-frequency of each member of the household or office must be determined before applying feng shui adjustments because everyone is unique. What works for one person may not work for another.
The human qi is comprised of the five elements: fire, metal, earth, wood, and water. The five elements possess different categories of qi, each with its own frequency. They are also associated to the five vital organs: heart, lungs, stomach, liver, and kidneys, respectively. When the body's qi is circulating smoothly along the body's meridians and is balanced, the body is healthy and the mind at peace.

Home or Office
In feng shui, your house and office are seen as extensions of your body. Every direction of the house or office is associated to specific aspects of your physical and psychological being. If the qi is compatible and flowing freely in your household and business, your body and psyche will manifest good health. If the qi is stagnant, it can have malignant effects on your health, relationships, and career.
The physical characteristics of a building, such as its age, form, and interior layout, are clues

that tell us about the energy inside. Using feng shui to assess and balance energy in a building allows us to create an environment that does not come into conflict with the natural processes of the body; the environment instead promotes bodily qi flow and enhances human well-being.

Environment
The shape, color, and location of the surrounding geography in relation to the building have a certain effect on the people dwelling within. This also includes the characteristics of nearby structures, trees, pools of water, and streets. The type of locale, be it suburban, downtown, or industrial, will also impact the feng shui and the people living within this environment.
The key point to remember is that the human body is deeply connected with the Earth’s qi and depends on it for survival. The Earth’s geomagnetic energy is what regulates our blood flow, which maintains our biological cycles. Considering the Earth’s qi is a reminder that destruction or disrespect of the Earth’s energy is no different than destroying and disrespecting ourselves.

Cosmic Energy
When we are considering how our environment affects us, we must look beyond our immediate surroundings and the things we can see and define. Although the planets and stars appear distant and small, their forces are powerful and uncontrollable. Ancient feng shui masters were keen observers of the natural cycles. They were astrologers that studied celestial movement as it related to terrestrial and human events. Every year the cosmic energies change and affect us differently. In feng shui, cosmic energies play a big role in affecting our well-being.

Feng Shui is not just about stairs lining up with doors, exposed beams, or houses at the end of a street. Feng shui is a complex phenomenon based on over 8,000 years of accumulated experience and culture. It is a philosophy that can benefit us greatly if used properly.
