Following is the last part of a series of articles highlighting a few of the many events that were forecasted to occur in 2009 by Liu Feng Shui, Inc. My father, Grand Master Chi-Jen Liu, and I were able to accurately forecast these events using the Flying Nine Star Charts, the Chinese Almanac (Tong Shu), Book of Changes (Yi-Jing), and
the Zi Wei astronomy charts.
WEST
With Star 2 in the west in 2009, we forecasted that western countries, such as the United States and its west coast regions, might experience fire and suffer increased pollution. The overlap of fire Star 9’s appearance in the center regions and the pinpointing of fires in the western United States was realized in the
Station Fire in Angeles National Forest - one of the largest fires this year on the west
coast.
Star 2 also brought an energy of ailment to the west direction, which is associated to the respiratory system. Indeed, President Obama declared the
Swine Flu pandemic a national
emergency. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the N1H1 virus was widespread in 48 of the 50 united states in 2009, and had already affected as many as 5.7 million
Americans.
An earth element, Star 2 fed the strong, ambitious feminine metal energy of the west direction. This led us to forecast that female-owned businesses related to entertainment, wellness, health, spirituality, and relationships would play a big part in refueling the western economy. The enlightening article,
“The American
Woman” that was featured in Time Magazine’s October 2009 issue revealed irrefutable stats confirming the dominance of female power in business. It stated that females made up over 50% of the work force in 2009. I encourage everyone to take a look at this fascinating article to understand the trends of our present and
future.
Star 2 is also an energy of money loss or job loss. The United States economy suffered greatly in 2009 with the unemployment rate hitting double digits. This rate marked a 70-year high in California, as reported by Jennifer Steinhauer of the New York Times.
Sitting Star 3 was defeated by facing metal Star 6, and indicated conflicts between lawyers and politicians, and between the judicial and executive branches of governments in the west. Due to the economy, the federal government (a leadership association with Star 6) made budget cuts in almost all state departments (associated to Star 3) causing great stress on both sides. On the west coast of the United States,
California faced one of the worst financial shortfalls of all of the
states.

SOUTHWEST
Metal Star 6 (associated with government leaders) in the southwest meant that governments in southwest regions would play a part in triggering economic growth and increased commerce. However, because Star 6 was untimely, we forecasted that wealth for leaders and
supervisors would come with complaints and dissatisfaction from their staff or civilians. Early last year, the United States House of Representatives introduced an
economic recovery stimulus package that entailed spending roughly $550 billion and making tax cuts of $275 billion. Appropriations Committee chairman, Representative David R. Obey commented, “You have to look at this bill as not a salvation for the economy by any means. It is simply the largest effort by any legislative body on the planet to try to take government action to prevent economic catastrophe, and even that may be
insufficient.”
NORTHEAST
Star 3 in the northeast had the potential to bring pediatric digestive ailments acquired from polluted or contaminated food. Among several cases of food quality control issues, one of the headlines in 2009 was the tainted baby formula in China that killed several infants. Gardiner Harris of the New York Times also reported that
food safety was no longer
improving, and that the number of diagnosed cases of illness caused by bacterial infection, such as salmonella, was
rising. Among those affected, children under 4 years of age were sickened more than any other group, and adults over 30 years old suffered more hospitalizations and death due to food poisoning than usual.
The wood energies of Star 3 conflict with the northeast earth energies. Because Star 3 relates to political issues and scholarship, and the northeast is associated to children, we forecasted that children’s education would likely suffer in 2009. In his article,
“Peering at the
Future”, Bob Herbert of the New York Times reported that education funding and performance level was declining in the United States compared to the rest of the world. The latest stats revealed that an American student drops out of high school every 26
seconds.
On a broader scale, New York Times reporter Paul Krugman pointed out that America led the way in universal basic education from the 19th Century through the 20th Century, and the results were economic success. He stated, “…our
college graduation rate [is] slightly below the average across all advanced
economies.” Without good college education, the average United States citizen is less likely to get a full time job, deepening the economic crisis. As Krugman pointed out, “…we need to wake up and realize that one of the keys to our nation’s historic success is now a wasting asset. Education made America great; neglect of education can reverse the process.”
