Liu Feng Shui Grand View is a philosophy defining 130 factors that affect who you are. This is the third article in a series presenting all 130 factors. Please refer to the first article for a complete introduction to this series. Today we will discuss Parent’s Background.

On a basic level, your parents’ background consists of their level of education and social status. These aspects inevitably influence your success in life. In many ways their background determines how you are raised. Are your parents liberal or conservative? Are they more scientific or artistic? Are they high school or college graduates?

The type of food your parents eat, how they express themselves, their health habits and personal hygiene, as well as how they view their careers and money all affect who you are. Whether you choose to imitate your parents’ lifestyle or do exactly the opposite, their attitudes and behavior influence your life.

Being born into a wealthy household and higher education does not guarantee a wealthy life, just as being born into a financially struggling household with lesser formal education does not dictate a life of poverty. Successful and highly educated people have been known to come from struggling families. Perhaps the family’s poverty instilled the need to work hard and think creatively in order to overcome that status.

Several of today’s famous and wealthy entrepreneurs grew up in a poor household. Some do not have college degrees and some do not even have high school degrees. Because of their family’s economic situation or their inability to thrive in the school system, they were forced to think “out-of-the-box” – a highly valued trait in innovators and entrepreneurs. This is not to say that education isn’t vital for a strong foundation of success, only that there are different types of intelligence that do not necessarily flourish within standardized conventions.

Conversely, someone who is born to parents who are both well educated and financially endowed may be well provided for, but might not have the opportunity to do things on their own. This individual may not have to work as hard, which could stifle independent thinking, drive, or the ability to think creatively.

In the end, even if the child from the struggling household and the child from the wealthy household end up at the same social and financial level as adults, they will likely have different ways of looking at life and making decisions because of their very different backgrounds. Understanding your parents’ background may help you see more clearly why you are where you are today.
